Kalimantan's Iban People

Diposting oleh Revalda Putawara

West Kalimantan is one of province in Indonesia which is inhabited by dayak tribe. The dayak tribe consist of 350 sub tribes, for example: Dayak Kenyant, Maanyan, Benuaq and also the Iban.
Iban population lives in West Kalimantan. Their traditional house is the Rumah Panjai. The ibans today are becoming more urbanized while retaining most of their traditional heritage and culture. Most of the Iban houses are aquipped with modern facilities and also other facilities such as telephoneline and internet.
Many theories exist, but the origin of the name “iban” is still a mistery. The Ibans were called “sea dayaks” during the British colonial era. They were the original inhabitants of Borneo Island. Not much is known about Iban people before the arrival of the western expeditions to Asia.
The Ibans in Kalimantan were traditionally animist, although the majority are now Christian, some of the muslim and many continue to observe both Christian and traditional ceremonies, particulary during marriages or festivals. Significant festivals include the rice harvesting festival Gawai Dayak, the main festival for the Ibans. Other festivals include the bird festival Gawai Burong and the spirit festival Gawai Antu.
Iban music is percussion-oriented. The typical Iban agung ensemble will include a set of Engkerumungs (a small agungs arranged together side by side and played like a xylophone, a tawak (the so-called ‘bass’), a bendai (which acts as a snare) and also a set of ketabung (a singlesided drum/percussion).
The ibanese can bedivided into different branches which are named after the geographical areas where they reside. These group can be related each other by the dialect they speak or their customs, rituals and their way of life.
